Vitamin Supplements, Minerals, Diet and Nutrition Information

The body needs vitamins to stay healthy and a varied diet usually gives you all the vitamins you need. Vitamins have to come from food since they are not manufactured in the body. There are 13 essential vitamins and each one has a special role to play within the body, helping to regulate the processes such as cell growth and repair, reproduction and digestion.

Essential Vitamins - The 13 essential vitamins are divided into two groups - Fat soluble and Water soluble vitamins. Vitamin A, D, E, and K are fat soluble and can be stored by the body. The B vitamins and Vitamin C are water soluble; except for Vitamin B 12, they cannot be stored in the body.

Vitamins and Nutritional Supplements

Most people get enough vitamins by eating a varied diet and do not need to take a vitamin supplement. Others, however, do not eat a varied diet and may become deficient in some vitamins. Elderly people in particular may not eat enough different kinds of food and may benefit from a vitamin supplement.

Some research suggests that the body uses up more vitamins when it is under stress, either from illnes or daily life. Many people therefore take vitamins when they are busy feeling run down or have a cold coming on. Smoking and drinking alcohol make it harder for the body to absorb vitamins, so if you smoke or drink heavily, you should either pay special attention to your diet or take a vitamin supplement.

Health Food and Diet Tips
  • Fats are needed to provide energy density and palatability to the diet. It also provides support by acting as a protective layer over the organs. The layer of fat under the skin provides insulation against cold.
  • Carbohydrates are the main sources of energy and essential for oxidation of fats. For Indians, they are a major source of energy providing as much as 90% of total energy.
Do not squeeze acne with your hands or it will spread more quickly and leave scars.
  • Mix equal quantities of squeezed lemon juice and rose water and apply it on the face. Wash the face after half an hour with fresh water. Pimples are removed within 10 to 15 days.
  • Clean the mouth every morning and evening after eating. This keeps tooth disease away for a long time.
  • Eyesight improves by daily massaging the soles and toes of the foot with mustard oil. It also benefits in dryness, swelling and cracks of the feet, making them strong and soft.
  • Do not rub your eyes. Keep an eye pad made of several layers of gauze for a few hours.
  • One should blink the eyes at least 10 times in succession, while doing constant work with eyes, so that the eye muscles get rest.

Role of vitamin in food and health

There are several roles for vitamins and trace minerals in diseases: (1) deficiencies of vitamins and minerals may be caused by disease states such as mal absorption; (2) both deficiency and excess of vitamins and minerals can cause disease in and of themselves (e.g., vitamin A intoxication and liver disease); and (3) vitamins and minerals in high doses may be used as drugs (e.g., niacin for hypercholesterolemia).

Recognizing Symptoms - With informative and accessible entries on the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, disorders and illnesses - and with a Quick Reference Guide to Symptoms - this section is an invaluable guide for the home and family.

Why take vitamin and mineral supplements?

People may consume diets that are deficient in one or more nutrients for a variety of reasons. For healthy people, supplements may help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies when the diet does not provide all necessary nutrients. They can also supply amounts of nutrients larger than the diet can provide. Larger amounts of some nutrients may help to protect against future disease.

What is the benefit of Multiple Vitamin-Mineral Supplements?

Multiple vitamin-mineral (MVM) supplements, sometimes known as multivitamin-mineral supplements, contain a variable number of essential and non-essential nutrients. The primary purpose of Multiple vitamin-mineral supplements is to provide a convenient way to take a variety of supplemental nutrients from a single product, in order to prevent vitamin or mineral deficiencies, as well as to achieve higher intakes of nutrients believed to be of benefit above typical dietary levels.

What are the supplements that might help turn back the hands of time?

Vitamin E should be top on your list of supplements to consider. Not only are there hundreds of studies showing this vitamin lowers heart-disease risk, but recent evidence suggests it also might help protect your memory. The brain is exposed to a hefty dose each day of oxygen fragments called free radicals that damage the membranes and components of brain cells, possibly contributing to memory loss as we age. People who consume hefty doses of anti-free radicals or antioxidants also show the least memory loss and the best concentration as they age. Even animals fed diets fortified with vitamin E learn faster and remember more. Limited evidence suggests that vitamin E also might slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

How much should you take?

You can get some vitamin E from nuts, seeds and oils, but not enough to prevent from ageing. A safe supplement dose is between 100 IU and 400 IU. Natural vitamin E is more potent than synthetic vitamin E.

Besides vitamin E, what other supplements are worth considering?

Calcium. It needs to be reminded to people that to boost their calcium intakes to lower their risk for not only osteoporosis, but possible colon cancer and hypertension, and pre-eclampsia in pregnancy. If you don't drink at least three glasses of non-fat milk or cups of yogurt, or drink calcium-fortified soyamilk or orange juice, then you need to take a calcium supplement. Since most people get at least 600 mg from their diets, you really only need to fill in the gaps by taking about 500 mg from a supplement.

tip of the day

Juicing fresh fruits and vegetables just before you consume them is an excellent way of getting the most vitamins from your food, as vitamins are destroyed by heating, water and exposure to air.
