Boost Your Self-Confidence in 5 Days PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Susan K. Minarik

What would you accomplish if your belief that you could trust yourself got an exponential boost?

We've all heard the famous Henry Ford quote dozens of times: "If you think you can do it, or you think you can't do it, you are right." He doesn't say, "If you think it can be done" or "if you think somebody can do it." He says if "you think YOU can do it." You may believe you have, or could develop, the knowledge and skills to accomplish your goal. But how strong is your confidence in your ability to stay the course when the going gets tedious or distasteful? Do you give in too easily to the temptation of ease or momentary pleasures?

Imagine knowing, from your own experience, that you could count on yourself 100% to maintain your commitment to a goal no matter what. Imagine if your "I can" was backed up by an unstoppable "I will."

Developing confidence in yourself is really just a matter of learning a skill, of practicing keeping promises to yourself until its second nature to you. You can get a taste of how deliciously empowering it is in five short days. Here's how:

First, rate your existing level of self-confidence on a scale of 1-10 so you have a benchmark for judging your results. Then, pick a simple and slightly challenging task or activity and commit to do it every day, without fail, for five days. Ideally, pick some action that will move you closer to one of your goals. Do ten sit-ups; help with the dishes; give up desserts; read for 15 minutes. Give some thought to your choice and select something that would be just a bit of a stretch for you and that you will feel great about having done for five days straight.

Next, write your self-promise down as a contract with yourself. "For the next five days, I will . . ." Sign it. Then do it. No matter what.

At the end of five days, take time to seriously evaluate the qualitative difference in the way you feel about yourself. Where do you fall on the confidence scale now? Then set a new goal for the next five days. Take the first task to another level by increasing its duration or number of repetitions. Or choose a new and slightly more challenging task to focus on.

Repeat this process for a month and your confidence in yourself will soar. You'll know you can rely on yourself to make choices that serve you even when it's not the most convenient or pleasurable choice the moment offers. Repeat it for 90 days and you'll be downright invincible.

It's as easy as it sounds--and astonishingly more rewarding than you can imagine! Give it a try; it could turn your whole world around.
