Every mother of a toddler would love just one thing in their
life. More time. Even just an extra ten minutes would go far to
help get things done. But alas, most toddlers have more energy
than the space shuttle in flight. Being able to focus that
energy to allow you some free time would be nice.
What can you do when you need just a few moments to get the
vacuuming done or just want to read the paper and drink a cup of
coffee before your day begins? Luckily for mommy, entertaining a
toddler is not difficult, just requires a little effort to work.
Toddlers are curious bundles of energy. To keep them
entertained, you need to focus that energy into an interesting
activity. Here are some ways you can do just that.
Shaking
Toddlers love to shake things and make noise. One way to satisfy
both of those favorite things is to take a clear plastic
container and place some child-safe items inside. The items can
be almost any child-safe item, from cereal to plastic
toys. Close the lid and let your toddler shake, rattle and roll
their container while you take care of your task. If you decide
to use food items you might have to teach your toddler how to
open the container.
Edible Art
A wonderful activity for a toddler is edible art. Graham
crackers, raisins, cereal, diced fruit, and peanut butter, just
about any snack food your toddler loves will work. Put a layer
of peanut butter on the graham crackers and let your child
create his own work of art. You will be amazed at the wonderful
pictures your budding artist makes.
Sorting
Toddlers love to sort things by size, color and type. Giving
your child a muffin pan and some colored dry cereal is a great
way to keep them entertained while you enjoy a cup of tea or
read for a little while. All he needs is a little direction and
watch him sort, and eat his game.
Pots and Pans Band
Music hath charms to sooth the savage child. Or if nothing else,
it will keep your child entertained for enough time to get a few
tasks done. But remember, pots and pans are very loud when
banged with wooden spoons. If you need your child's activity to
be quieter, then try plastic bowls instead of metal ones.
Hidden Toys
Most children have more toys than they can play with at one
time. If you want to keep things fresh for your child, and
grab yourself some free moments consider keeping some of your
child's toys put up out of sight. As your child grows tired of
his present toys, bring out the stashed toys for an exciting
afternoon of discovery and play.
Every mother needs a break, but we cannot always take one.
Finding new activities for your child to do can give you that
break and give your child something fun to do.
